Multi-Region DR
A disaster recovery approach that maintains infrastructure in a geographically separate AWS region, protecting against outages that affect an entire region rather than a single availability zone.
Definition
Multi-Region DR replicates infrastructure and data into a second, geographically distant AWS region, protecting against failure scenarios that a single-region, multi-AZ setup cannot: a regional service disruption, not just a single data centre outage. It's a materially larger investment than single-region resilience, both in cost and complexity, so the decision to pursue it should be driven by what a workload's RTO and RPO actually require, not adopted as a default.
In Practice
A firm subject to strict regulatory resilience requirements may need multi-region DR for its core services, while a lower-criticality internal tool may be entirely adequately served by single-region, multi-AZ resilience alone.
