AWS Cost Explorer is a built-in reporting tool that breaks down historical and forecasted billing data by service, linked account, region, or custom cost allocation tag. It's the starting point for most cost investigations, since it's already available in every account, but it shows what was spent, not why; identifying the underlying cause of a spend spike usually requires cross-referencing it with usage metrics and architectural context.
